Hampton, Virginia is located on the southeastern portion of the Virginia Peninsula. It holds the world's first bridge tunnel, which was opened in 1957 and crosses the channel that is the gateway to both the Atlantic Ocean and the Chesapeake Bay. The tunnel was expanded in the 1970s and remains the busiest and deepest bridge tunnel. When you plan a trip to this area of the country, accommodations are plentiful. All of the hotels Hampton has to offer have specific features and amenities available to their guests. Visitors can choose between hotels in the heart of downtown and those in other parts of the city. Many of the hotels Hampton has within its city limits feature indoor pools and fitness centers and some have business centers as well. Hampton has two unique areas that are both linked to the Chesapeake Bay. The downtown waterfront area and the Phoebus and Fort Monroe area have distinct features that draw guests to their attractions.
The downtown waterfront portion of the city has been renovated to welcome visitors. Tourists enjoy the cobblestone streets and brick sidewalks that connect the shops, restaurants, museums and parks. The Royal Customs House in this area is where the British used to bring tea, cloth and many other supplies for the colonists to purchase. You can stop by the visitor center and get a brochure to help you take a walking tour of the downtown area at your own pace. The visitor center is also where the harbor tour boats and fishing boats launch. You can also take a ferry service to downtown Norfolk from this site.
Next to the visitor center, you will find the NASA Langley Research Center and the Virginia Air and Space Center. These facilities tell the stories of space exploration and aviation in the IMAX movie theaters. You can browse the many planes and artifacts that help you get a better understanding of the history and future of air and space travel. Right next to the space center, children enjoy the authentic 1920s wooden carousel that has been fully restored. Rides are offered April through December for just 50 cents.
Mill Point Park on the waterfront is the place to go for live music. On Wednesday evenings, the park hosts rock music shows and on Fridays, you can hear jazz. The Saturday night block parties feature top 40 music along with games and street entertainers.
The Phoebus and Fort Monroe area is located on the eastern side of the city. Phoebus was once a town of its own and it has retained a lot of that originality and character. The town was consolidated into Hampton in 1952 but it still holds its own identity.
Phoebus has a unique mix of old homes, arts and crafts shops, antique galleries and restaurants. The restored American Theater is the premier performance venue in the area. You can catch Broadway shows, classical and jazz concerts, dance performances and special gala events at this venue throughout the year.
Fort Monroe is the largest star fort in the country. The star-shaped fort has a moat surrounding it and its original mission was to protect the entrance to the roads in the city as well as the ports that have access to the waters. The fort is famous for imprisoning Confederate President Jefferson Davis during the Civil War. Visitors can now take a look at the casement museum in the fort and enjoy the beautiful views of the bay and the picturesque structures surrounding it.
Hampton also has two public beaches, named Buckroe Beach and Grandview Beach. Buckroe Beach used to have a boardwalk amusement park. Today, the beach features lifeguards and fishing piers and on summer evenings you can catch outdoor movies and concerts on special nights. Grandview Beach has a much more natural setting. This beach is accessible through the trails in the Grandview Natural Preserve and there are no lifeguards on duty.
A vacation or business trip to Virginia will go a lot more smoothly if you have the right accommodations. The hotels Hampton has for guests vary quite a bit in style and features. You can choose your hotel based on the location it has or the comforts it provides. Once you find the right accommodations, you can start looking forward to your journey to this historic state.
